Septentrio Expands mosaic-G5 GNSS Ecosystem for Drone and Autonomous UAS Navigation

Septentrio, part of Hexagon, has expanded the technology ecosystem surrounding its mosaic-G5 GNSS receiver modules, adding new commercial partners, open-source reference designs and additional integration options for drones, robotics and autonomous systems.

The expanded Septentrio mosaic-G5 GNSS ecosystem is intended to make it easier for developers to incorporate resilient, high-accuracy positioning into size- and power-constrained unmanned platforms while shortening system development and integration cycles.

Septentrio mosaic-G5 GNSS Ecosystem Expands

The mosaic-G5 ecosystem now includes boards and integration products from multiple technology companies.

Partners identified by Septentrio include:

  • SparkFun
  • ArduSimple
  • GNSS Store
  • ARK Electronics
  • ANavS
  • Holybro
  • MikroElektronika
  • Systork
  • Gateworks
  • 3DR

Hoverfly and CUAV are also joining the ecosystem as new partners.

According to Septentrio, the different products provide developers with multiple form factors and integration paths for incorporating mosaic-G5 technology into UAVs, robots and other autonomous platforms.

Open-Source Designs Target Drone and Robotics Developers

Septentrio is complementing commercial partner products with open-source hardware reference designs.

The new designs include:

  • mosaicG5-HAT
  • TeenG5
  • moTi
  • G5Dot

These reference designs provide compatibility with several widely used development and computing ecosystems, including:

  • NVIDIA
  • Raspberry Pi
  • Arduino
  • Teensy
  • M.2

The company said providing ready-made starting points can reduce the amount of hardware development required to integrate high-precision GNSS into new systems.

Compact GNSS Module Targets Size-Constrained UAS

The mosaic-G5 modules measure 23 mm by 16 mm and weigh as little as 2.2 grams.

Their compact size and weight are intended for applications where space, payload and power consumption are important considerations.

Potential applications include:

  • Drones and UAVs
  • Autonomous aircraft
  • Robotics
  • Mapping systems
  • Industrial autonomous platforms
  • Other size- and power-constrained systems

Septentrio positions the modules for reliable and resilient high-accuracy positioning without sacrificing performance because of their small form factor.

Developer Ecosystem Designed to Shorten Integration Cycles

The expansion is intended to provide developers with more choices for connecting mosaic-G5 modules with other hardware platforms.

“The value of technology grows with the community and ecosystem around it,” said Gustavo Lopez, Market Access Manager at Septentrio.

“Our goal with mosaic-G5 is not simply to provide great GNSS technology, but to create the building blocks that allow partners and developers to innovate around it.”

According to Lopez, combining commercial partner products with open-source reference designs allows developers to connect mosaic-G5 technology with broader hardware ecosystems and create integrations beyond what Septentrio could develop independently.

High-Precision Positioning Supports Autonomous Systems

GNSS positioning is a critical component of many autonomous UAS and robotics applications, providing aircraft and other vehicles with information required to determine their position.

The mosaic-G5 family supports multi-frequency, multi-constellation GNSS positioning.

Supported satellite navigation systems include:

  • GPS
  • Galileo
  • GLONASS
  • BeiDou
  • QZSS
  • NavIC

Septentrio develops high-precision GNSS technologies for applications requiring reliable positioning, including UAVs, robotics, construction, mining, surveying, mapping, maritime operations and logistics.

Commercial and Open-Source Development Expand mosaic-G5 Options

Septentrio said the combination of commercial partner products and open-source projects creates a broader development foundation around the mosaic-G5 family.

The expanded ecosystem is intended to give developers additional hardware choices while reducing development time for new drone, robotics and autonomous-system projects.

Septentrio is also presenting its GNSS technologies at DroneX in London on September 29-30.

The expanded Septentrio mosaic-G5 GNSS ecosystem combines an ultra-compact receiver module with commercial integration boards and open-source reference designs, providing drone and autonomous-system developers with additional pathways for incorporating resilient, high-accuracy positioning into new platforms.
