Terra Drone’s B1 Interceptor Drone Passes Japan ATLA Counter-UAS Demonstration Test

Terra Drone Corporation has announced that its Japan-made Terra B1 interceptor drone has passed a demonstration test conducted under the Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency’s Interceptor Drone Early Acquisition Program. The result moves the aircraft into the next stage toward mass production and potential procurement for Japan’s defense requirements.

According to Terra Drone, the demonstration follows the July 15, 2026 selection of Terra B1 for testing under the ATLA program.

Terra B1 Interceptor Drone Advances Toward Mass Production

Terra Drone said Terra B1 was previously selected from proposals submitted by 38 companies and has now solely passed the program’s demonstration test.

The company said the result advances the aircraft from the demonstration stage toward preparations for mass production and procurement.

Terra B1 is a Japan-made interceptor drone designed to counter long-range loitering unmanned aircraft, including Shahed-type drones.

ATLA Program Targets Rapid Counter-UAS Deployment

According to Terra Drone, ATLA established the program in response to the increasing importance of attack UAVs and interceptor drones.

The program is intended to allow the Japan Self-Defense Forces to acquire drone countermeasure equipment more rapidly.

Based on ATLA’s published schedule, the program called for:

  • Demonstration testing from late July through early August 2026
  • A mass procurement contract in late August
  • Delivery around September 2026

Terra Drone said the schedule represents a fast-track process moving from demonstration to potential mass procurement in approximately three months.

Demonstration Covers Operational and Production Requirements

According to Terra Drone, ATLA’s requirements extend beyond aircraft flight performance and include factors related to operational deployment and procurement.

Evaluation areas include:

  • Effective range
  • Flight duration
  • Flight distance
  • Maximum speed
  • Cruising speed
  • Guidance method
  • Number of aircraft controlled simultaneously
  • Launch and recovery methods
  • Integration with other systems
  • Safety measures
  • Operational track record
  • Time between contract signing and delivery

Terra Drone said successful completion of the demonstration moves Terra B1 toward the next production stage, including preparations involving domestic manufacturing and operational support.

Terra Drone Plans Domestic Production Expansion

Following the demonstration, Terra Drone plans to accelerate development of production and supply capabilities for Terra B1 in preparation for potential mass procurement.

The company’s planned initiatives include:

  • Beginning mass production of Terra B1
  • Establishing domestic production and procurement systems
  • Strengthening supply chains for components, batteries, communications and control equipment
  • Developing maintenance, replenishment and training support
  • Integrating the system for operations at bases, vessels and critical facilities
  • Expanding quality control and safety management for defense applications

Terra Drone said it intends to combine knowledge obtained from operational environments, including Ukraine, with its domestic production, manufacturing and regulatory capabilities in Japan.

Potential Deployment Could Expand Across Self-Defense Forces

According to Terra Drone, initial deployment is expected to begin with the Maritime Self-Defense Force.

The company will also consider future expansion to meet operational requirements within the Air Self-Defense Force and Ground Self-Defense Force.

Terra Drone said system configurations could be adapted to the operating environments of each branch.

The company is also reviewing the potential impact of the program on its consolidated financial results for the current fiscal year.

The successful ATLA demonstration moves the Terra B1 interceptor drone into the next stage toward mass production as Terra Drone develops domestic manufacturing, supply and operational support capabilities for the Japan-made counter-UAS platform.
