Teledyne FLIR OEM has been selected to support the U.S. Army’s Delivering Unmatched Thermal Capability Hastened initiative, known as DUTCH. The program is focused on advancing next-generation uncooled Teledyne FLIR thermal imaging technology for defense applications, including unmanned aerial systems.
The initiative is led by the Office of the Assistant Secretary of War for Critical Technologies and the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command C5ISR Center.
Teledyne FLIR Thermal Imaging Advances Under DUTCH
The DUTCH initiative is focused on strengthening U.S. thermal sensor capabilities by improving the performance of uncooled thermal sensors while reducing size, weight, power and cost.
According to Teledyne FLIR OEM, the program will also focus on scaling the technology for high-volume manufacturing to support future defense programs.
Uncooled thermal sensors are used across several defense applications, including:
- Uncrewed aerial systems
- Loitering munitions
- Thermal binoculars
- Weapons sights
U.S. Army Award Supports Uncooled Thermal Development
Under the award, Teledyne FLIR OEM will continue development of uncooled thermal imaging technologies and apply its system integration capabilities to development and demonstration efforts aligned with U.S. Army modernization priorities.
The work builds on the company’s investments in small-pixel-pitch uncooled thermal architectures and product development intended to support integration across defense and uncrewed missions.
“Teledyne FLIR OEM is proud to contribute to the U.S. Army’s efforts to accelerate next-generation uncooled thermal performance while strengthening a secure, resilient domestic industrial base,” said Paul Clayton, president of Teledyne FLIR OEM.
“Our ability to deliver state-of-the-art, NDAA-compliant thermal imaging solutions on time and at scale helps reduce program risk and ensure reliable long-term access for critical defense programs, like Drone Dominance.”
DUTCH Targets Size, Weight, Power and Cost
The DUTCH program is intended to improve thermal sensor performance while addressing SWaP-C requirements.
The initiative focuses on:
- Improved uncooled thermal sensor performance
- Reduced size
- Reduced weight
- Reduced power requirements
- Reduced cost
- High-volume production capabilities
According to Teledyne FLIR OEM, these objectives are intended to support future defense programs requiring scalable thermal imaging technologies.
Program Supports Domestic Thermal Sensor Manufacturing
The DUTCH initiative also aligns with Department of War priorities focused on secure microelectronics supply chains and domestic manufacturing capacity for mission-critical technologies.
Teledyne FLIR OEM described itself as a U.S.-based non-traditional defense contractor with experience in high-volume manufacturing and system-level integration of uncooled thermal imaging systems.
The company’s participation is intended to support a scalable domestic supply base for infrared components.
“A trusted, scalable, and resilient domestic supply of high-performance thermal imaging camera modules is vital to U.S. national security,” said George Bobb, President and Chief Executive Officer of Teledyne Technologies. “Across Teledyne, we are committed to moving quickly to develop and deliver the critical defense technologies needed by our war fighters.”
The DUTCH award will support continued development of Teledyne FLIR thermal imaging technologies as the company works with the U.S. Army on next-generation uncooled infrared sensing for UAS and other defense applications.
