The Unmanned Safety Institute and Robotics Education & Competition Foundation have announced a partnership to provide participants in the RECF Aerial Drone Competition with access to FAA Part 107 preparation. The program connects hands-on student drone competitions with training for the FAA Remote Pilot knowledge exam.
The partnership is intended to provide students interested in unmanned aviation with a pathway from competitive drone experience toward certification and workforce opportunities.
FAA Part 107 Preparation Expands for Student Drone Competitors
The partnership connects the RECF Aerial Drone Competition with USI’s Commercial Remote Pilot Exam Prep Course.
According to the organizations, the program provides an additional pathway for students interested in pursuing FAA Remote Pilot certification and exploring careers in unmanned aviation.
RECF’s Aerial Drone Competition engages thousands of students each year through team-based STEM challenges.
The competitions are designed to develop skills including:
- Technical knowledge
- Programming
- Communication
- Critical thinking
- Problem-solving
- Drone operations
As students gain experience operating drones in competitive environments, the USI program provides access to the knowledge required to prepare for FAA Part 107 certification.

USI’s Commercial Remote Pilot Exam Prep Course provides self-paced instruction covering topics included in the FAA Part 107 knowledge exam.

- Other Part 107 knowledge exam topics
According to USI, the course is designed to provide aspiring commercial drone pilots with a foundation in safe and responsible drone operations while preparing them for certification.
Drone Training Supports Workforce Development
The organizations said the FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate is required for most commercial drone operations in the United States.
