Motorola Acquires Silvus for $4.4B to Boost Mission-Critical Drone Communications

Motorola Solutions finalized a monumental agreement to purchase Silvus Technologies, a Los Angeles-based specialist in wireless radio systems, for $4.4 billion, marking its second-largest acquisition to date. The deal, which includes $4.38 billion in cash and $20 million in restricted stock for certain employee equity holders, also offers Silvus the opportunity to earn an additional $600 million based on performance milestones through 2027 and 2028. This acquisition, expected to close in the third or fourth quarter of 2025 pending regulatory approval, positions Motorola to enhance its communications portfolio amid rising global demand for secure, mission-critical systems driven by geopolitical tensions.

Silvus, established in 2004, is renowned for its software-defined mobile ad-hoc network (MANET) technology, enabling high-speed, secure data, video, and voice communications without fixed infrastructure. Its systems, widely used in military, law enforcement, and maritime operations, mesh together to form scalable, self-healing networks that adapt to mobility and harsh environments—key for applications like drone operations and autonomous systems. Motorola, traditionally known for two-way radios, body cameras, and emergency alert software, aims to integrate Silvus’ advanced engineering with its global market reach to serve defense and public safety sectors more effectively.
