China Certifies First Unmanned Helicopter TD550D for Advanced Operations

The TD550D coaxial unmanned helicopter system, developed by United Aircraft, has become the first of its kind in China to secure a type certificate from the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), marking a significant milestone for the nation’s unmanned aerial systems (UAS) industry. The announcement came from the developer on Friday.

Tian Gangyin, CEO of United Aircraft, emphasized that this certification establishes a benchmark for future unmanned helicopter airworthiness standards in China, addressing a previous gap in the country’s UAS certification framework.

The airworthiness certification process kicked off in late 2023, with United Aircraft conducting extensive testing to validate the TD550D’s safety and reliability. The evaluation spanned critical components such as the rotor system, powerplant, avionics, and flight controls, encompassing 29 compliance verification tests and over 2,600 preliminary flight hours.

Designed for versatility, the TD550D offers impressive specs tailored to challenging environments like plateaus and islands. It boasts a maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) of 1,411 lbs (640 kg) at sea level, dropping to 1,213 lbs (550 kg) at 16,404 ft (5,000 m). Payload capacity peaks at 441 lbs (200 kg) at sea level and remains robust at 265 lbs (120 kg) at 16,404 ft, showcasing its high-altitude capabilities.

The platform targets applications in emergency response, firefighting, and smart logistics, equipped with features like emergency return, autoland, and forced landing capabilities for fail-safe operations.

This milestone aligns with a booming UAS sector in China. Yang Jincai, chairman of the Shenzhen Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Industry Association, reported that the country now hosts over 20,000 drone operators, generating an annual output value of roughly $29.26 billion (210 billion yuan)—a 39.5% jump from the prior year. Shenzhen, a key UAS hub, accounts for nearly 2,000 of these firms, contributing $14.9 billion (107 billion yuan) in 2024 alone, up 12% from the previous year.

For American UAS professionals, the TD550D’s certification highlights China’s accelerating advancements in coaxial rotorcraft, potentially signaling competitive pressure in payload-heavy, high-altitude mission profiles.
