Wisk Aero Soars to New Heights with First Public Air Taxi Flights in Los Angeles

Wisk Aero, a renowned leader in the Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) sector, has significantly extended its presence in Los Angeles, a pivotal hub in the AAM industry. This expansion includes the region’s inaugural public air taxi flights and crucial discussions with local and city authorities.

In a historic milestone achieved in October, Wisk became the very first electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) air taxi company to conduct flight operations in the greater Los Angeles Area, specifically at Long Beach Airport. These groundbreaking test flights marked a significant leap forward in autonomous flight operations within a complex real-world commercial airport environment, alongside conventional passenger airline operations.

The pinnacle of this endeavor was witnessed during the Long Beach Festival of Flight when Wisk culminated its flight program at Long Beach Airport with the region’s premier public demonstration of an eVTOL air taxi flight. This groundbreaking flight featured Wisk’s 5th Generation autonomous eVTOL aircraft, known as Cora. This remarkable achievement underscores the safety and viability of autonomous passenger flight.

Adding to this monumental achievement, Wisk played host to esteemed guests, including the Mayor of Long Beach, local and state officials from the broader Los Angeles region (including Orange County), and key representatives from Boeing. The purpose of this gathering was to engage in productive discussions concerning the future of Advanced Air Mobility within the region.

Brian Yutko, the CEO of Wisk, passionately expressed, “Autonomous flight is possible today, and it’s happening now in LA.” He highlighted that Los Angeles holds a prominent position as a target launch city for many entities in the industry. Wisk takes immense pride in being the inaugural air taxi company to conduct autonomous flights in LA, and this achievement has been made possible through the valued partnership and support of Boeing and Long Beach. Wisk envisions making safe, autonomous flight a daily reality for Southern California and the world.

Wisk’s leadership journey in the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area commenced in 2022 with a strategic partnership announcement through the city’s Long Beach Economic Partnership (LBEP). This collaboration primarily focuses on evaluating, planning, and implementing AAM solutions in Long Beach, as part of a more extensive regional network, with a particular emphasis on autonomous flight. To further this cause, Wisk sponsored research on the economic impact of AAM for the region, conducted by California State University, Long Beach, resulting in a comprehensive report.

Mayor Rex Richardson of Long Beach expressed his pride in witnessing the transformation of flight into a tangible reality in Long Beach. He highlighted the city’s rich aviation legacy and its role in creating and sustaining numerous careers over the decades. Mayor Richardson eagerly looks forward to working closely with Wisk and Boeing to generate employment opportunities and integrate a safe, quiet, and environmentally responsible transportation option into Long Beach.

Notably, in July 2023, Wisk achieved another remarkable milestone by conducting the world’s first public demonstration of an autonomous eVTOL fixed-wing aircraft during EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, WI. This successful flight showcased the safety and quiet efficiency of autonomous, all-electric air taxis while providing invaluable insights for Wisk’s flight and operations teams.
