Honeywell, a multinational technology company, has recently introduced VersaWave, a new small satcom system that incorporates 5G technology to provide beyond-visual-line-of-sight (BVLOS) communication for the Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) and Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) industry. The system integrates multiple connectivity options, such as satcom, cellular (5G, 4G, 3G), Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth, into a small and lightweight package. With its ability to automatically transition between cellular and satcom connectivity, the VersaWave system offers reliable Inmarsat satcom coverage when outside cellular coverage.
The system’s cellular capability includes high-speed 5G connectivity supporting low latency and high data transfers at a low cost, whether on public or private networks. Additionally, it has an onboard Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) reporting for real-time position tracking. The VersaWave system is expected to offer customers greater flexibility and low-cost connectivity solutions, without the need to install multiple systems. Furthermore, the system is Wi-Fi and Bluetooth-enabled for remote configuration.
According to Steve Hadden, the Vice President and General Manager of Services and Connectivity, Honeywell Aerospace, “VersaWave significantly enhances our small satcom system introduced in 2021, and we expect it to be adopted not just by the AAM market but also defense and commercial customers.” Honeywell Aerospace products and services are used in nearly every commercial, defense, and space aircraft worldwide. Its hardware and software solutions aim to create more fuel-efficient aircraft, direct and on-time flights, and safer skies and airports.
The VersaWave with 5G system is undergoing qualification and certification and is expected to be commercially available in the third quarter of 2023. The system’s compact design means users of the current small satcom system can upgrade with minimal downtime of their AAM and UAS platforms. Overall, Honeywell’s new VersaWave system with 5G technology offers the AAM and UAS industry an efficient and cost-effective way to provide reliable connectivity solutions.
Honeywell Aerospace products and services are found on virtually every commercial, defense and space aircraft. The Aerospace business unit builds aircraft engines, cockpit and cabin electronics, wireless connectivity systems, mechanical components and more. Its hardware and software solutions create more fuel-efficient aircraft, more direct and on-time flights and safer skies and airports.
