Real World Testing

The UASweekly staff tested the X-Naut in real-world flying conditions in the Arizona desert.

We tested the unit flying our DJI Patman 4 Pro in hot midday temperatures over 105 degrees. Our testing was for a total flight time of 4 hours. The X-Naut kept our iPad cool with no issues. After the last flight, we placed the iPad in one of our vehicles with the windows up to try to cause an overheating shutdown. The X-Naut performed flawlessly the iPad never overheated.

For our next test,  we used the same iPad/ X-Naut setup running the ForeFlight app continuously while flying from Phoenix to Tuscon and back. Our iPad worked perfectly for the entire flight, the X-Naut has earned a place in our flight bag

The fans are quiet and have been tested to ensure they do not interfere with cockpit electronics. The X-Naut is powered by AA batteries making it completely wireless, running for over 10 hours on a single set of batteries. Pilots can also use a USB charging cable to power the cradle. There’s even a handy battery test button and indicator light on the side of the X-Naut.

The X-Naut is well made, with conformal-coated electronics to resist moisture and dust. A spring-loaded clip on top makes it fast and easy to insert your iPad and there’s only a simple power button to turn on.

Conclusion

The X-Naut has been getting great reviews and we are going to agree. The X-Naut is a must have if you fly in extreme conditions. We consider it a mandatory piece of safety equipment for any pilot using an iPad as their sole source of in-flight information. If your a UAS operator the X-Naut is a great option to keep your iPad cool and keep you flying. We will be using the X-Naut on every flight.
